Frequency Is Most Important,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
My intention in writing this article is to pass along the most fundamental, but equally most important information I can about resistance training using weights. While there are a great many authors on this subject,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], my purpose is to guide you in this theater in accomplishing a strong, flexible, and functional body well into old age.
Now I know there are a great many people who will say that they can’t afford the expense or time of a gym or any training program that keeps them from home. I’d like to think I’ve heard all the excuses. Buy a pull-up/dip station for your home. Weight training is not limited to iron weights. You carry around the best tool possible: your body. Most weight lifters will never accomplish ten reps of pull-ups, but with a little time and work, you will be able to perform twenty to twenty-five of these nonstop. The same goes with dips. Several sets of these two or three times a week will give you incredibly strong shoulder, back, and chest muscles. Look at the bodies of gymnasts. Again, endurance is key to overall strength and longevity.
Ever marvel at the power and speed of cats? Watch their stretching routine. The joints are opened, never compressed. This allows power to flow effortlessly. Look at how many people are stooped and inflexible in their older years. This is due to inactivity, both muscular contraction and expansion or stretching. Stretching will keep the tendons and joints flexible and impart greater strength to the body than resistance training alone. I know too many people who are broken down in their prime due to too much strain on their bodies without the counterbalance of stretching. This is probably the most overlooked area of strength building. Yoga is a marvelous adjunct to any training routine.
A good many of gym exercises and the equipment to perform them are a waste of time and can lead to debilitating injury.

When you have to push a car,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you apply yourself in the correct manner automatically. If you took a good run at the car and slammed into it, the car probably wouldn’t budge, and you would be the worse off for trying.
No Excuses
While it is never too late to begin such a program, the earlier you start in life, the better your discipline and training will become. I have been weight training for over thirty years as well as incorporating body weight training and what Charles Atlas used to refer to as dynamic tension. As I now have the opportunity to interview many people at gyms, I have come to see how little they really understand of what they’re doing and how little endurance most of them have.
There is a gentleman by the name of Matt Furey who has numerous publications about body weight training. These are definitely worth looking into as you will be challenged to perform even a few reps when you first get started,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The only equipment you’ll need to bring to the party is your body. Now you have no excuse not to get started.
Use It or Lose It
Whatever you do, do it for you. If you wish to alter your being because somebody else is pushing your buttons, you won’t last long. Make it a lifelong commitment for a long and healthy life. My personal motto here is “And the weak shall inherit the girth.”
Sounds pretty simple, doesn’t it? You wouldn’t believe how many people do exercises in a fashion that is unnatural for the body. Getting hit by a car years ago showed me pretty quickly what works and what doesn’t for my back. I have known so many people who are in constant pain because of constantly performing the same exercises because they were told they should. Listen to your body. Pain is your body telling you that something is wrong. Figure it out. Change the way you do the exercise, and see if that makes a difference. If you keep pushing through the pain, you will be headed for surgery or incapacity. This will be counterproductive to achieving a strong body. Whenever possible,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], use dumbbells. These allow for a broad range of motion and certainly task the muscles more effectively than any bar can do. If you experience pain when pressing a bar overhead, you may find this goes away by simply using dumbbells and rotating your hands ninety degrees. Simple, but it works.
Isolating the Muscle Isolates the Joint
Routine: the word implies dull and dead-end. In my program, I have two light days with high reps, two medium days with more weight and moderately high reps, and two power days with lower reps and heavy weight. Don’t always start with the same body part. Change the type of exercise for each body part every two weeks or so. Stay on high reps (up to twenty) for a month,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and then switch to lower reps with greater weight for a month. Your body will continually respond and adapt. If you become bored, your training—and consequently, your results—will reflect this.
Again, I will break precedent with so many in the weight lifting field. Your limiting factor in weight training or any other form of exercise is how well your tendons and ligaments deal with the stress. Connective tissue takes much longer to strengthen or repair if damaged. Your body was never meant to push or pull in an isolated manner. When you pick up a child or push a wheelbarrow, your body works as a cohesive unit. If you use equipment that isolates a particular muscle group,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as a preacher bench for bicep curls, you also focus undue stress on your elbows. Most folks who use a preacher have ripping pain in their elbows as they curl. And yet they continue as they love the pump. To what end? When you can’t pick up your kid anymore because of shoulder or elbow pain, how are you better off? Use exercises that allow your body to support what you’re doing.
Frequency also applies to the amount of repetitions per set. Using a higher number of reps (the number of times you press or pull the weight before failure) will build strength and endurance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Endurance is just as or more important than strength alone. Remember the joke Robert Duvall told Sean Penn about the bulls in the movie Colors? Strength means very little if you’ve blown yourself away after only sixty seconds of effort.
Last but Not Least
Our muscles and skeleton provide a frame of reference for each other. As our need for strength increases, even if modestly, our frame or skeleton will also strengthen to provide a frame of reference. In other words, as our muscles grow and strengthen, our bones will have to as well to deal with the stress. If a person does little in the way of exercise, the muscles will stay in a weakened state, and consequently, so will your bones. As we age, this becomes more of an issue in being able to withstand the most basic of physical stresses and only hastens our physical demise and potential for injury. Weight training can and will stave off the ravages of time and decreasing hormonal output and keep our bodies strong and better able to repair themselves,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and we will maintain increased physical and mental vigor.

There is a plethora of information on types of exercise and routines to use. The single most important thing in all these is frequency of training. Most folks will never win a marathon or become a champion fighter by only training once a week. With regard to weight training, I diverge from the crowd. Most of the people I speak to train each muscle group only once per week. I train each group three times per week. For years I stuck with twice a week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], until I came across a program from the Soviet Bloc in 1989 that advocated training three times per week; this program created a fundamental change in my whole approach. I realize I am hard-core and wouldn’t ask the average person to try this as it is very taxing in terms of effort and time. So many people tell me that they are too sore to train twice a week per muscle group and that I must have good genetics to be able to recover so well and still train like this at the ripe old age of forty-six. This is hogwash. Any and all training routines are about discipline first. Nothing will be gained without effort and dedication. Slow and Steady
To stay healthy and continue to build strength and endurance, you should always focus on style and never speed. I know all about the speed training techniques and the reasoning behind them. It is all too easy to cause injury when you move a weight too fast.

The irony was that my train,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the ‘slow’ train, left the station first and arrived at Watford just ahead of the ‘fast’ train! I watched so many people, complaining and totally stressed out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as they got off the ‘fast’ train.
How would it be that, as an individual, you look at it from a different perspective and that you get a different result? You get the gift of receiving un-conditional love because you gave it to yourself first? Now there’s a thought…..
A year ago I was standing on a train, waiting for it to leave the station. It was the fast train from London to Watford and it was packed as it was during the rush hour. There were a few minutes to go before it was due to leave and the guard made an announcement. He said that there was a fault with the engine and that it might be better to change and get the slow train that was leaving in a few minutes from the next platform. There was then, what I can only describe as, a stampede! People dived off the train and ran to the empty train to try and get a seat. As people settled down, a station worker shouted an announcement from the platform. His message was far from clear, but as some people decided to make a mad dash back to the original train, even though they could not hear the announcement, the others just followed!

I came up behind him and started talking to him. He told me he was looking up the ingredients to make a certain drink. So we chatted a bit, turns out he is from London (great accent!) and is in the States in my city for about a year. He has a master’s degree and is tutoring little kids.

I'm a single gal who (despite being very attractive) has not been on a date with a man in a year. I have exchanged numbers with several men during that time but none seem interested (mainly they were dating another girl already so I keep missing my chance.) I keep a very friendly, confident, positive attitude about life.
1) The term can mean anything. You don't know specifically what he meant; but frankly, it doesn't matter that much anyway. Let's say that he only sees you as a friend. Fine. If all you ever wanted was for people to come to work on time and do what's specified in a job description, you could just manage them the way you do anything else, such as funds, tools, equipment, supplies, etc. You wouldn't need people skills.

To get what you really want in the workplace, you have to lead others. You have to grow them into the kind of people who do these things. You have to inspire them to do it. You have to support them and encourage them. You need effective leadership skills. Eventually, when they know the leader,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like the leader,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], respect the leader and trust the leader, then they may choose to give that level of effort. And that's why effective leadership skills are so important in an organization. It's not rocket science, but it's the real reason why managers need to make the effort to develop the people skills and personal strengths that will make them better leaders.
But what most managers really want is for team members to do their best work - both individually and as a coordinated effort.
Why is it so important for a manager to be have effective leadership skills? To me, the answer is simple.
People have talent. They have energy. They have the potential to be creative. They can be bold, patient,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], persistent, and a lot of other things as they work through tough challenges.
The problem is, even if they're capable of delivering this kind of effort, they don't have to. There's a certain level of performance - and they know what it is - that's specified in their job description. To keep their jobs, that's what they have to do. I have a service background, and as a consultant I've worked in a variety of bureaucratic environments, and many times I quickly sized up what was going on. Often, it wasn't "high performance." It was just "showing up for work" and doing what employees could be held accountable for. I learned that not a whole lot of leadership was going on.
But this level of effort is what managers recognize as "business as usual." It's not the kind of high performance team members are capable of. You can't demand these things and you can't hold people accountable for them.

Have you ever had a boss you admired and trusted so much that you'd do anything for him? Someone who gave you the responsibility, authority, freedom of action, and recognition you felt you deserved? Did you love coming to work every day because you knew your boss believed in you? The polypill gets its name by combining low doses of 5 different drugs: aspirin for its anti-clotting properties, statins to reduce cholesterol and three different medications for lower blood pressure. It’s been developed primarily for protection against heart disease as high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels are major risk factors for the condition.
Other side effects of polypill components include dizziness, persistent dry cough, muscle cramps and pain, erectile dysfunction, nausea, diarrhea,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], anxiety and memory loss. Many of these symptoms are infrequent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but what level of risk is acceptable to a healthy person? Every drug has risks and side effects; five of them together introduce complications that are as potentially dangerous as they are unpredictable.
Fortunately, not all doctors are equally impressed by the polypill and some even question its purpose. People at risk of or already suffering specific conditions often need higher doses of one or two specifically targeted drugs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rather than a low dose scattershot of several. And many people are intolerant of or resistant to one or another of the polypill medications. “Drugs need to be tailored to the individual needs of the patient,” says Dr. Bonow.

Yet another new medical wonder, the so-called “magic bullet” or polypill for lower blood pressure and cholesterol, is making quite a buzz in the media. Backers claim it could “slash the rate of deaths from heart attack or stroke” by at least 50% or even, according to some sources,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], by 80% or more.
Worst of all, the polypill is yet another step in a relentless pursuit to medicalize vast numbers of healthy people. This insidious trend is illustrated by the healthy and confident,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], middle-aged man or woman who comes out of their annual checkup a scared patient with a sack full of unnecessary prescriptions.
We should also be extremely skeptical about grandiose claims of effectiveness. There is no real evidence whatsoever to support claims that the polypill can cut heart attacks and strokes by 50% or more. The data simply does not exist. Instead, the figures are obtained by manipulating complex probability formulas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which are often not borne out by long-term experience.
Drug companies use the same techniques to predict the incidence of side effects, but in this case with the opposite bias! Side effects are notoriously minimized and you can see this in action in the polypill as well. The safety of statins for instance, a major polypill component,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is hotly contested, yet press reports paint only a rosy picture of a medication “well-tolerated”. No mention of atenolol side effects either, effects serious enough for the drug to have been withdrawn for the treatment of hypertension in many countries including the U.K.
Proponents of the drug call for it to be prescribed to everyone over the age of 55, some 75 million people in the United States alone. Some go even further and urge it to be used by everyone from the age of thirty. Nicholas Wald, a researcher at the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine in London says: "there's probably no other preventative measure which would have greater impact on public health in the Western world".
And the risk to healthy lifestyles posed by the polypill is not just motivational: one of the “magic bullet’s” ingredients is atenolol,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a blood pressure drug whose well-known side effects include fatigue, dizziness and short windedness! People taking atenolol describe attempts to exercise on the drug as “trying to swim through molasses”. So in terms of lifestyle the polypill is counter-productive. Some magic bullet… a dud is more like it!

Doctors and other experts have long insisted that the most effective protection against heart disease is a healthy lifestyle, a notion that’s become firmly embedded in our consciousness if not always in reality.
